Maybe fame is giving Kanye some omnipotence issues.
‎
Marco Brambilla’s (that’s the director) POWER shows a continuous camera move from extreme close-up of Kanye West revealing an a neoclassical environment (explicit reference to the Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel) showing characters and creatures surrounding all moving in extreme slow motion.
‎
The motivation behind such an egocentric video stands in the historical period of K life made of self-examination and hard judgements; also the Tiger Woods issue inspired the choice of representing an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption.
‎
Legend wants that Kanye remained very impressed from the Brambilla’s “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel, then West told him the Standard installation was similar to something he would post on his blog. That’s where the magic happened: K gave blank page to the director in order to direct one of his latest album’s video, and POWER was the result.
‎
Brambilla released loads of interviews where he explained the mastery of the creating process: the creation of the concept was the hardest part, once the concept was locked, the process took three.four weeks. “[...] it was pretty fast; essentially a three-four week process.
‎
The shooting was made with a phantom camera in extreme slowmotion; then he shot images of the models at the casting and put the images together in photoshop and then translated that to motion footage: “We used every conceivable leading-edge tool that’s at an artists’ disposal.”
‎
The post production was pretty intense because there were about 22 layers of video in the piece and each piece has to be choreographed—it’s almost like a very complicated matrix, in order to make it real they used everything from 3-D graphics programs to this thing called “The Flame” that’s used for feature films. It’s basically a compassing tool; it’s very much like how Photoshop works for stills.
