The first decade of this century had seen the spreading of stop motion. Stop motion everywhere. Maybe it is because is the easyest low budget way to make an interesting video, maybe because it’s just it.

As a result we have another stopmotion video. But, you’ve got to admit, we make a strict selection among all the videos of every category, and only review those who stand out for one reason or another. So let’s dive into “Now + Again”‘s videos, directed by Martin Rhys Davies of Razrez films.
The thing I appreciate the most of the Razrez crew, is that for each video they shoot, they write what was like the shooting and all the information, we like to hear. So let’s hear what they have to say about it.

The video basically portraits a 3d jenga-tetris moving in a no longer in use warehouse, what we discover to be
“A gigantic ex-book store in the form of a freezing warehouse provided the setting for a host of over sized Tetris and Bedlam cube style pieces to galavant about as support act to It Hugs Back (4AD) and their latest single, ‘Now & Again’.

The Book Barn in Bristol was the largest book retail outlet in Europe. After it closed down, we moved in for a week, surrounded on all sides by mountains of books which formed ready made scenery.

Animating life-size puzzle pieces was a stop-motion conundrum in itself, especially when it came to assembling them all into a massive moving wall. It was pretty confusing at first but by the end of the week, we had perfected a whole new technique: puzzle-mation. Side effects included bad backs, and Tetris dreams.

The location presented a number of challenges, not least those of working in a giant freezer, the lack of electricity and the huge windows on all sides. The windows meant that we had to incorporate the natural daylight until sundown, which at the time of year was around 4.30pm. After that we went into a tungsten set-up. Because of this, the band footage had to be shot in sequence, the plan being to work our way from one end of the building to the other, hopefully reaching midway, before the last of the daylight started to fade. It meant working very quickly and we just about managed it.

It took another 5 long days to shoot all the stop-motion, which again had to be scheduled around the daylight and night time sequences. Our lights were powered by a diesel generator which had to be wheeled around to different sides of the building. It only broke down once, which gave everyone a very good reason to get out of the freezer and into the Boca Bar up the road.

To the best of our knowledge, this was the first stop-motion music promo to be shot using the RED One Camera.”
