This is the video for Dead Weather‘s 2010 single Blue Blood Blues.

It’s a great example of how visual style can be an elevation of what music can express. The support that this videoclip gives to the raging rock sound of Dead Weather is amazing. The tune gains an extra dose of energy from it.

Blue Blood Blues was directed by Tim Wheeler and Christopher Mills.

The first step they followed was to record a live performance of the band at the Third Man Records in Nashville. Once the footage was gained, it has been cut, edited and sound adjusted. Then, the phase that gave identity to it could start.

Once on Premiere or Final Cut the latter part was done, they worked on the visual style: Jack White (Lead vocals, Drums) just asked for something “[…] raw and nasty”. What Wheeler, Mills and their team did was to create this sort of dynamic comic style focusing on the wiggling effect of continuous change of contrast of the black and white images. Then, by using a series of post production filters and regulations on the sections of the video they added posterization effects, screenings, brush strokes and positive to negative changes. Everything in order to make the clip very dynamic.

So, there’s not always need for a lot of money or for crazy technologies to create a good video. The only important thing is to have a good idea when you start!
