If a music video must be the true representation of a song, and of the band which plays it, then “Pet Shop Boys – Love etc.” must be something that has to do with lovers’ light attitude and it must remind electronic toys. What’s better than a completely, fluorescent, phantasmagoric pink video game inspired to baroque art period?
That’s what the Dutch artist Han Hoogerbrugge must have thought. From the first second we’re teleported to a parallel universe, characterized by the iconography of Nintendo consoles that we all experienced during our adolescence: jumps, extra lifes, stars and obstacles, where the hell is my controller? It is impossible not to be catapulted into the gaming experience, which in this case, I swear I’m performing in the role of Mario’s Princess; with this blinding pink background maybe I don’t even have to take mushrooms.

Technically, we’re talking about a video that is relatively simple to produce, 2D animations come from the most basic approach to After Effects. What is truly unique about this video is the level of illustrations, which are between the modern handmade representation style and the XVIII century iconography . Tridimensional animation is also used in the chapter where pastel backgrounds disappear and b/w invades the screen, a trick used to put ourselves in the avatar shoes.

In a certain way, this video reminds me some of Kenzo Minami’s early works, although in this case the videogame universe is much less geometric than the japanese graphinc designer’s artworks. If you want to see them, here it is Kenzo’s website.
I’m gonna cut the communication right now, i finally found my controller.
