Are you ready to be transported into a world of fairytales and colors? A world exuberant and explosive, as her protagonist: Nicki Minaj. Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8, 1982), known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian-born American rapper, singer, songwriter, and voice actress. Her personality is strong and impressive, fans love her so that they work out a Wiki Minaj. It’s not the first time of Nicky on WannaPlayDaily: during the Summer Heat Week (August 13th – August 19th) we have spoken about her Starship music video.

The music video we present today is “Va Va Voom“. It was filmed on December 21, 2011, in Los Angeles and was directed by Hype Williams.

Harold “Hype” Williams (born 1970; Queens, New York), known also as HYPE, is an American music video and film director of African American and Honduran descent. Williams first displayed his work by tagging local billboards, storefronts, and playgrounds using HYPE as his graffiti tag. “That’s probably what stimulated my interests in color,” he says. “I wanted to be Basquiat or Keith Haring of the streets.”

Hype has created a number of music videos for many artists, including 2Pac “California Love”, The Notorious B.I.G. “Warning” and “One More Chance”, Craig Mack “Flava in Ya Ear” (Remix), LL Cool J “Doin It”, Nas “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)”, “Street Dreams”, “Hate Me Now”, Missy Elliott “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)”, “She’s a Bitch”, Busta Rhymes “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See”, TLC “No Scrubs”, Kelis “Caught Out There”, Jay-Z “Big Pimpin’”, Kanye West “Gold Digger”, “Heartless”, “All of the Lights”, “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”, Aaliyah “Rock the Boat”, Christina Aguilera “Not Myself Tonight”, Coldplay “Viva la vida”, Ne-Yo “So Sick”, Hoobastank “If I Were You”, Left Eye “The Block Party”, t.A.T.u. “Gomenasai”, Ke$ha “We R Who We R” and Jack White “Freedom at 21″.

This videoclip is not the first and unique work with Nicki, they have collaborated in five music videos: Massive Attack, Roman in Moscow (Unreleased), Stupid Hoe and this Va Va Voom. Moreover he has directed two videoclip featured by Nicki, Hello Good Morning (Remix) and Fireball, and taken pictures of her in the Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded photo shoot, pictures that where featured as the cover and packaging of Nicki’s second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

We can say that this video is set on a fairytale. Two unicorns appear running across water and then Nicki, with a male companion (rumored to be Robin Hood) behind her. He tries to woo Minaj, but she continues to play hard to get. Special effects are displayed throughout the video. The unicorns appear again, and the tale change: Minaj is now wearing a blonde wig. Another change and she is in turn the Disney princesses Merdia, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. Sometimes return the unicorns, the theme of the fairytale world, sometimes it’s Nicki herself a unicorn! Nicki pulls a surprising twist by appearing as the evil Queen and seducing the male companion when he arrives to save the “Snow White (Nicki)” from the glass showcase.

The style is the Minaj ones! Strong saturated color, vivid and glow, clearly distorted and exaggerated. Contrasts as strong too and light have a main role during the whole video. Effects of frames’ distortion, multiply, repeated, staggered, overlapping. They are all quickly and have the purpose to be optical and to hypnotize, contributing to carry you in the fairytale.

Thumbs up for Nicki and Hype!
