In 2009 M83 orginized a video contest for their song “We Own the Sky”. Although crowdsourcing can be dangerous in this field, where high-level technical skills are needed, some of the submissions were really interesting.
Today’s video didn’t win but it was far better than the winner IMHO, that will be reviewed here on WPD tomorrow. This video is very pleasant, visually speaking, it presents a wide range of geometries obtained with particle clouds. The idea is pretty basic but it offers a wide range of possibilities and it has been nicely developed by the director, who explored different kind of effects. He played with focus change and slow motion to create a dreamy, relaxed mood that fits the song in a great way.
The only things that doesn’t convince me are the shots with the lightbulb and with the guy who draws with light. They seem a little out of place in an otherwise perfect video and maybe that’s the reason why M83 prefered Young Replicant’s clip.
