We’ve already talked here about some videos of M83, but never over the trilogy that comes with the new album “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming”, recently nominated for two Grammy Awards. This trilogy was directed by Fleur & Manu, with special support from The Creators Project, and is composed for “Midnight City“, “Reunion” and “Wait”.
Fleur & Manu are known for some music videos made for Sébastien Tellier and the video “No Brain”, for Etienne de Crecy, which earned them awards in UK Music Video Awards 2011 and D&AD 2012.
Anthony Gonzalez said “I love composing music with pictures in my head, it’s really what’s driving me [...] Cinema is the biggest influence for me – even bigger than music itself, so this album is built as a soundtrack, as an imaginary film. This is what we tried to convey with this trilogy.”
Actually I didn’t become fan of these videos. They remind me X-Men and Star Wars movies, but with children. I don’t think that those are bad movies, but I think this trilogy deserved more. I think the beginning of “Midnight City” has so much potential that ends up falling into something that everyone has seen before. The picture and sound quality is very good, but the argument is a bit weak.
In my opinion “Wait” needed more than a child walking.
From the minute 01:31 you can see scenes aesthetically strong that could have a dramatic impact, but lose power being placed in the background of a child with super powers.
However, only this video could be the end of the trilogy. After all, he has incredibly powerful scenes that make us really feel the music. There are lots of pictures and strong concepts that could have succeeded better in the eyes of the viewer, if they hadn’t been so mixed with others that have nothing to do. There is an attempt to show too manny things in short time.
