WPD:  How was created the project “Il Moro e Il Quasi Biondo? Can you explain us the story behind the choice for this name?

Lorenzo Commisso: The project was born looking at an horizon. The name is “horizontal” and carries multiples imaginary references. The name extended itself in all those american series teams, and of course we have to mention
Ennio Morricone and Sergio Leone in “The good, the bad and the ugly”.
At an analytic level is a color range that goes from dark brown to light brown, we think about that impossibility to distinguish a blond and an albino in a black and white or sepia photograph.

 

WPD:  How did the concept for “grossa pianta grassa” was born? What are the thematic issues?

Lorenzo Commisso: The idea was to associate visuals and sound in a didascalic and tautological way, with Magritte-surrealist contrasting events where words (sounds, musical note) and image find a new kind of connection.
As example the bowling strike sound, which initially correspond to the ninepins visual, later on is associated with the dices. This video has been made with the same technique the record has been made, a huge cauldron of sounds from disparate sources, mixed together in a whole, a brown, that refers indeed at the chromatic concept of the group name (The dark-haired and the almost blond”. We have been influenced from Blob, a tv program aired on RAI 3, an italian tv channel. In the closure of the video you can hear the screams taken from Blob the movie.

 

WPD:  We noticed that in the video the sound component plays a lot with the visual one. How did you create this relation, and above all, how have you been working to make this effective?

Lorenzo Commisso: We’ve used sound mixed with melodies, so it was very easy to find a match with visuals. A small dog bark with a technological help can be transformed in a t-rex. I believe that Spielberg has done something similar for Jurassic Park.

 

WPD:  How the video has been made? Could you give us a technical explanation of the editing and the frame choices?

Lorenzo Commisso: I’ve recorded my monitor for several months while I’ve been browsing on the web, then I’ve cut and edited all those footage following the sounds of the record, and I’ve kept two moments from the footage that define my daily routine: when the camera moves away my room can be seen and when you can see the crocodile cursor, which will be eaten by the toucan. I’ve used metalanguages that gave me the possibility to play between reality and fiction.
My reflection thoughts were considering the video as a tool, a media. I record pixel, not images, therefore the point of view is different on the video objects as seen through a monitor.

 

WPD:  How much do your videos represent yourselves, and how is your music and aesthetic style evolved?

Lorenzo Commisso: Il Moro e il Quasi Biondo it’s not a duo, quite the opposite. They were born in 2006. Our official videos are “Possono essere baciate” (Could be kissed) and “Grossa pianta grassa” (Big fat plant). Those two videos represent us in two different ways. One it’s a long take that plays on the mispronouncing of our name and works on the  “Grossa pianta grassa” enigma. The other video is a continuos cut out, a mosaic, that shows the system we use to compose our music. Both songs have as titles crossword definitions and the images unveil the solution. “Possono essere baciate”, mangling the name we can still obtain a rime. The solution of “Grossa pianta grassa” is “cactus” and appears during the video between the transaction of the society optimism, the play and the carelessness, and in the end the chaos arrival. This plant is the symbol of a holly well in the desert. It gives people hope of life in a place where nothing grows, this is a thinking over the environmental problems, it’s a consciousness raising. Or changes are continuos and at every concert happen. We are developing a bigger concert. Our style change and it’s an intrinsic fact of our same genre music: the Sharada music, that involves a perpetual style changing.

 

WPD:  Would you let someone else direct your videos? If yes, who?

Lorenzo Commisso: “Possono essere baciate” has been directed by Dandaddy and we are very grateful for the visibility that Mtv gave to us (Our video aired on Brand:New). But in my opinion Michel Gondry remains my first choice for the direction of an hypothetical Music video. We have an upcoming new album and ,as the former one, it contains a lot of collaborations (such as Matteo Dainese, Manuel Pitton, Roberto Dagostin, Mario Ruggero, Chewingum, Davide Toffolo, Above the tree, Brown and the Leaves, Videodreams, Superegos, Arbeiter).

That’s why it’s really hard to define our band just a “duo”.
