How can I describe this? Well, it’s simple and clean, that’s sure. It’s beautiful… And powerful. I wonder how so few elements can make a video so rich.

Tension. You can feel it from the very beginning, when you see a rope vibrating just like the guitar string you’re hearing. And then it grows, slowly, following the music. We see the crow, trying to escape through a window, but we don’t know what frightens him so much. Finally we see the owl. He doesn’t do anything, he simply stands there watching his prey, calm and powerful. His white eyes don’t communicate any emotion in contrast with crow’s eyes, which are the only coloured element in the video, and in which you can see fear and terror.

Nothing really happens in this video, it is just like a picture, but his elements are slowly revealed to the viewer, and that’s what makes it so effective. You build shot after shot the sense of the entire situation, like a jigsaw. Nothing is too fast or too slow., everything comes in with the perfect timing. There is nothing more than the necessary, the owl doesn’t do anything because he doesn’t need to.

Sincerely, I’m not a big fan of minimalism. But I’m really impressed by Emmanuel Ho’s work, he is probabily one of the best animators I’ve ever seen. Check out his website, it deserves too.
