Hi, folks!

I’m back with good stuff today!

No, I’m not a drug dealer. Stop asking.

I’m bringing you a very nice little video we found only lately, from Gotye.

Guess you remember Gotye, right? He’s an old friend of ours!

This is the videoclip for his late-2010 song Eyes Wide Open (from the album Making Mirrors, of the same year).

It was directed by Brendan Cook and made by the guys of PictureDRIFT.

It’s a cool one. I really appreciate apocalyptic stuff.

I’m not a big fan of sci-fi actually, but when it comes to imagine some kind of global disaster I have real fun (maybe sometimes I’ll tell you about my theory in which bedbugs, once they acknowledge their own powers, dominate humanity and turn us all into slaves, and we’re all doomed to a life of hiding in freshly-washed blankets).

First impression: total mess. I didn’t understand a single thing about what the story told.

Second impression: I was right at the first sight. It’s a mess.

Third impression: nevermind. Let’s just enjoy monsters and explosions.

What I really enjoyed is the peculiar atmosphere of the video. It reminded me somehow of Star Wars. And especially (if you’re an old school videogame nerd like me you’ll agree) of HL2‘s Striders sections.

Let’s talk technique now. It’s what makes this video so peculiar.

It’s a mixture of 3D stuff, 2D stuff and reality footage.

For backgrounds they always used real footage. They’re real and they’re created with time-lapse technique. Many times 3D objects are overlapped to the background, created in 3D with something like Maya or 3Ds Studio Max.

Animation of objects is made with 3D Animation, while explosions are made in 2D, with After Effects probably.

The characters are made in a very strange way. They look like they’re real figures, but they’re entirely created in 3D. What makes them so “material” is the way they’re animated: once modeled, their actions were created frame by frame, moving every part of them on the software step by step.

Once you mix all these elements together, the result is what you see. It’s very strange, right?

Maybe it’s a bit of a messy video, and you can’t follow a real storyline, but it’s pretty enjoyable.

See you soon, buddies!
