Today is another special day! We have interviewed AndrГ© Gaspar, the director of Jono McCleery’s videoclip Fears.
AndrГ© Gaspar is CEO at Nebula Studios and here you could find other interesting works of them.
Everything in the video’s realization is calibrated. It’s perfectly assembled and the use of video’s effect is well weighted. Zooms, different shots, overlapping images and focused game create dynamism. Excellent relation between video and song: images and sound rhythm mix together and drive the viewer in a unique experience.
Let’s see what AndrГ© Gaspar tell us about Nebula Studios and this video!

WPD: How do you know Wanna Play Daily? Which are the reasons that brought you to suggest your work particularly to us?

AndrГ© Gaspar: Nebula Studios is a digital animation and video studio. We seek constant innovation in our projects and we keep an eye on blogs representative of visual culture. Wanna Play Daily is a reference when it comes to sharing audiovisual projects so we decided to approach you. We think our last project fits your communication and we hope we can contribute to the vast inspiration content you share.

WPD: A director based in Lisbon, a London based solo artist, and a video filmed in Berlin. Tell us how did you get in contact with Jono McCleery and the story behind the Berlin based video.

AndrГ© Gaspar: The internet allows us reach so many people in the world. Today we live not only locally in our country but globally, and this creates a new crossing of talents’ paths. Nebula as a creative studio often seeks approaching new artists to create a new, innovative product. Jono’s music was an inspiration which set into motion our creativity and technique and that’s something we really value. Berlin breathes life, culture and art and we quick realized it was the ideal place to deliver the music’s message.

WPD: Talking about the video, were the location decided in advance or was it a “random” footage of the city?

AndrГ© Gaspar: It wasn’t a random choice. Life in Berlin always inspired me and I already had in mind to use it in a project. Lots of stuff happens in Berlin at the same time, the city breathes culture! Passion, disappointment, an act of courage or fear, an hour walking through Berlin and you can write a book on happenings. That’s why it’s the perfect city to deliver the song’s message.

WPD: How long did the filming process last? And how long did it take to edit the whole video?

AndrГ© Gaspar: The video was shot in 4 days and it took 2 weeks to edit. Nebula did a very thorough job, where the edit was pretty much done frame by frame. The idea was to always have the image in perfect sync to the sound so it can pass the audience the rhythm of life in the city.

WPD: We have noticed a frequent use of hard cuts that fragmented the movements and change radically the point of view. We have seen this technique also in others of your works for Nebula Studios, is this been used in “fear” as a metaphor for something else or is it only for aesthetic purpose?

AndrГ© Gaspar: The editing style had the purpose of conveying the feeling of rhythm, as if it were lived in real time and by one person. This supports the idea that’s behind the vivid city, where fears arise and challenges are overcome. The editing style is purposeful and tries to bring the audience closer to sound and image.

WPD: Which is your role in Nebula Studios and what are the field in which the studio works?

AndrГ© Gaspar: I am one of Nebula Studios’ founders and besides managing the company with my two partners, I have creative direction and directing functions. Nebula is a Portuguese digital animation and video studio, the world is our market and we try to explore both creativity and technique. Even though we like to work with artists and to find mutually beneficial projects in art, most of our work is digital animation project, mostly 3D, for TV and web. We work for big multinational brands and we are one of the biggest digital animation studios in Portugal. Every day we work towards reaching out to the world.
