Hey there, folks!

In this cold day, I’m here to bring you something that is going to definitely warm you up! We are working very hard lately, in the hidden part of Wanna Play Daily and getting back to write something for you is a real pleasure (or, at least, something that gives me a little break!).

I’m glad of presenting you a very tasty candy we discovered wandering back in time. This is the official music video for Daft Punk’s Something About Us, from their album Discovery (2001). The video was released in 2003 as part of the promotion for the Interstella 5555 project (I’ll get to it later).

Daft Punk are awesome. If you follow WPD, and me in particular, you may have noticed I’m a Rock And Roll guy and that electronic music doesn’t fit me very much. Daft Punk are kind of an exception, though. They’re so talented that I have to appreciate them. They shaped electronic music of 00′s and they know stuff! This track makes no exception, it’s very tasty!

The video for this song is an “episode” of Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5escret 5tar 5ystem, a feature-length Japanese animated musical film originally released on December 1, 2003. It’s a visual realization of Discovery, the album by Daft Punk, produced and created by them in collaboration with Toei Animation.

The movie has no dialogues and every track of the album is an “episode” of the story told in the anime (for further info, check the link upwards).

It’s a very ambitious, experimental and strange project. Daft Punk Style!

Talking about technique, it’s a classic anime. It’s hand drawn in the beginning, then digitalized, colored and animated with a specific software (for example, Anime Studio Pro).

This kind of animation is different from the regular one we talk about here on Wanna.

This kind of software lets you only to make 2D animations, but it gives you full control over your drawings and makes the task much easier than using a general purpose software like Adobe After Effects. Music is added posthumously.

That’s pretty much it about technique. The main part is the conception and the style of the drawings, which is very peculiar: the taste is completely japanese. If you know a bit about cartoons, or you at least remember the anime you grew up with (Ranma 1/2, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Inuyasha and stuff like that — I was born in 1990 —) you’ll understand swiftly what I mean. In my opinion it is very cool that western music meets eastern animation.

It’s like a melting pot for two completely different and closed worlds.

The result is very beautiful, if you appreciate the genre. Especially for the strange starting point of the project!
