Hey guys!

Ready to get amazed? Today, as usual, I’m bringing you a super cool video.

I’m talking about the videoclip made for Clubfeet’s track Everything You Wanted, single from their brand new album Heirs And Graces (2013). It was released about a month ago by the band, directed by Josh Thomas and crafted by the very talented hands of OH YEAH WOW. Check out some of their stuff, because they’re very good at what they do!

First things first: watch it and build your own idea about it.

In my opinion it is very cool, because many times I’ve seen videoclips overdoing it (too many techniques, too many things to remember, too much brain requested while you watch it and so on). This one is very simple when you watch it. It looks like a simple “one long take” (quoting Alfred Hitchcock): same simple setting throughout the whole scene, same actors, nothing special happens.

But what is astonishing is the strange presence of a doppelgänger of the main character! It looks like he fuses with his clone from the near future many times during the video. And here is the magic: one single filming trick that leaves everyone stunned!

How is it made? I did a little research here and there trying to have some kind of tutorial for doing it, but I found nothing. So I’ll just explain it to you roughly by myself.

Every big illusion is the juxtaposition of many little details that make it possible.

First, the video is slower than normal, then the camera just follows a straight line preceding the action and camera movements are little and very slow. And, very important, too: the framing is very wide. Every single one of this characteristics is important.

The video was shot as one long shot with everything taking place in it. Then, as usual, magic takes place in post production. Once everything was shot and imported (most probably) in After Effects, the guys from OH YEAH WOW duplicated some frames of the main character, and using Photoshop they cut out of the frames only his body. By doing so, they were able to reimport this modified frame, and insert it in the scene. Using the 3D view of AE‘s composition stage they could place the modified frame above the raw footage and making it be “an image from the future”. Calculating the right position (helped by the characteristics of the footage I listed earlier), we get the illusion that the main character fuses with his doppelgänger.

How cool is that!? Remember, if you are making a video, in order for it to be cool, you don’t have necessarily to be rich. You just have to be clever!

See you soon, guys!
