Blood Orange - Champagne Coast from Andreas Nout Schmidt on Vimeo.

Choose Haley Wollens (the “stylist/GIF queen“) as director and give to Andreas ‘Nout’ Schmidt the animation work and you will have the new video for Texas born singer Devonte Hynes AKA Blood Orange: Champagne Coast.

Mixed media visuals have created a surreal alternate reality in which lot of sexy New York girls dancing by themselves, The dancing is reminiscent of so-bad-its-good 1990s video game 3D animation. The whole thing feels a flat and Photoshopped collage realized with After Effects.

Wollens created a lush, second life world for each character by mining the best pre-Trumblr (Blood Orange have a Trumblr blog here) image archive, the library. In an interview for the New York Times, answering at the question “where did this idea of girls dancing in bedrooms, all crudely animated, come from?” they added: “From the word “bedroom,” which I say roughly 738 times in the song.” (Devonte Hynes) “A girl alone in her bedroom is a recurring moment that has often inspired me, for example in films like “Paris, Texas” and “Bye Bye Birdie.” I wanted to represent this in a new way, but the thought of scouting and styling seven different real-life bedrooms at the time was too big a feat for our modest project. It was then that I came to a conclusion that feels quite common among my generation in 2012: “Let’s Photoshop them in.” With producer Maya Barrera, I spent hours at the library sifting through and scanning our favorite rooms from interior design magazines. I collaged the various backdrops together, combining the images from old magazines with photos I found of real teenager’s bedroom walls. With the help of Berlin-based animator Andreas “Nout” Schmidt, Jude Miller-Chapin and I were able to create a perfectly rendered 3-D world for our subjects to exist in — inspired by Second Life YouTubes and video games, like Duke Nukem.” (Haley Wollens). The décor in each girl’s bedroom seems very specific. “All of it was created from scratch. I sent Haley a list of artists work I wanted to be represented in the video” said Hynes.

Wollens describes the coming together with Hynes of the idea behind the video: “The concept for the video came to me when I was listening to “Champagne Coast” alone in my bedroom, dancing by myself in the mirror. I have always been infatuated with the movement of a woman’s body while dancing. The confidence exuded during this action is so captivating, I find that nothing is sexier. No make-up, outfit, nor genetic physical appearance can outweigh the mesmerizing power of a female when she moves. At its heart, this music video is about just that. The first time Dev and I met in person, I pitched him the video. The idea was simple: girls dancing with themselves in bedrooms and other interiors. Dev was in and the journey began. The casting was, of course, essential. All of the subjects are friends of mine; contributors to the creative New York scene that Dev and I both inhabit. Each girl possesses vivid personality. They are all some of the best dancers I know. They represent my idea of what it means to be an “it” girl.”
