And here we are with the daily video with a kind of special edition!
We interviewed for you the director of the Bios’ video These Cables Are Blood Avenues, he will reveal you the technical realization details, so a big thanks to you, Nondas Sapidis!
This video is perfectly in the song’s mood: dynamic, full of short cuts, well played between color and black and white photography, made even more attractive by the proper use of graphic and light effects.

Let’s find out what Nondas said!

WPD: We ask this to all the directors who contact us: How do you know Wanna Play Daily? Which are the reasons that brought you to suggest your work particularly to us?

Nondas: I came across WPD through a twitter interaction and thought it would be a good idea to send my film work for a possible presentation of one of my music videos. Seems it worked out just fine!

WPD: In this video we notice some different effects, focusing, colored filters, words and glyphs overlapping the images and image noise. How much of these were planned ahead and how much have been decided in the postproduction phase?

Nondas: It was almost planned ahead as I tend to hate the crystal clear motion pictures and never ever leave footage the glamorous way the video looks when untouched and raw. What is more, it was planned to shoot a story within the band’s performance but due to time and place restrictions we only had 2 days and so we were left with just the band’s takes. If I hadn’t used any of these effects, words, film clutter and glitches in “These Cables are Blood Avenues” I think it wouldn’t be as exciting as it is now, forcing the viewer stop the music video half way through. On top of that, Bios’ music tends to be punchy and quite violent so I guess some twitching and noise would look cool as hell.

WPD: How long did the filming process last? And how long did it take to edit the whole video?

Nondas: The filming process lasted 2 full days and editing the footage took about a month. Editing-wise, it’s still the hardest project I’ve worked on because there was no storyboarding so it was all up to me where to place the footage every other half second in the clip. Yet, so much exciting cause fast and nervous editing seems to be my favorite part of the job.

WPD: Which camera and software did you worked with?

Nondas: I shot this particular music video on a Panasonic AG-HMC151 and sold it right after filming. I then invested the money on a 7D with which I’ve been working on since last year. I find the convenience and quality offered by DSLRs just insane as a combo, all packed in an affordable price range as well. As for software used, I color corrected in After Effects and edited the footage in Sony Vegas Pro 10.

WPD: Where is the location you have used, the has it been designed by you?

Nondas: We used just a wall in my house in the attic which we then decorated with newspapers, burnt magazines, rough sketches and some lyrics. You know there’s always great toys and gadgets in an attic, so there’s no need to visit IKEA! Except maybe some of the coolest and cheapest lights out there, both for in frame and out of frame use. After all, you can see the main light used for about the 80% of the clip hanging from the top.

WPD: Tell us more about the band, and how did you translate their music into vision.

Nondas: Probably the easiest part was translating the band’s music into visuals. I knew since day one that this style of music would best match with fast paced editing and very short takes that the eye can’t really follow in detail. However, since the song “These Cables are Blood Avenues” mixes darker tunes with a party vibe serving quite of a positive feeling, I thought warm tones would suit as good as cold/blueish ones. So, coloring the footage was another challenger yet awesome experience in my 2-year journey as a colorist.
