So, What could be more trashy-chic: Azealia Banks with her long purple hair, funny sunglasses and an unusual combination of clothes or her latest music video “Atlantis”? I would say both.
Mermaids figure heavily into the iconography of au courant Harlem-bred dance-rapper Azealia Banks, and never more so than in the new video for “Atlantis,” a percolating track from her Fantasea mixtape. In director Fafi‘s video, Banks rides dolphins, flexes octopus tentacles, and generally reenacts “Under The Sea” via goofy no-budget CGI.
Every scene has been theatrically filmed with the green screen and after that they added a lot of 3D animations of dolphins, sharks and everything that could be related with sea life.
Let’s talk about some gossip. Just hours after Rihanna performed her single “Diamonds” on Saturday Night Live in front of a backdrop seemingly pulled right off Tumblr dashboards, Azealia Banks dropped a music video for “Atlantis” that featured similar Lisa-Frank-Meets-Seapunk aesthetics. Was it purely coincidence or did Rihanna’s SNL performance and Azealia Banks’ new video for “Atlantis” both pull from the same Internet aesthetic? And do either of them have to answer to the crew of Internet artists that have been calling foul?
This video has a lot in common with Time To Pretend, don’t you think?
